Affectionate Fathers
It is no news to hear that a father’s love is just as important as a
mother’s. But new research points out just how much dad matters.
A recent review of almost 100 different studies, reported in Parenting
Magazine, found that the more affectionate a father is with his
children, the better they manage emotionally. They tend to be more
generous and have better social skills and a stronger sense of
self-worth. Several studies reviewed suggested that a positive
father-child relationship might even be the chief reason children avoid
certain problems, such as delinquency and substance abuse.
The study was carried out by the center for the Study of parental
Acceptance and Rejection, at the University of Connecticut. According to
lead researcher Dr. Ronald Rohner, for reasons that are unclear,
children tend to perceive fathers as having more prestige than mothers,
which lends more impact to conversations they have together.
Fathers be advised, if you didn’t know it before – showing affection to
your children can provide them with greater skills to handle their own
emotions and their social lives.
