Single fathers

One of the most difficult issues to cope with as a single parent is an overwhelming feeling that you have to be both mother and father to your children. This feeling becomes even more intense if the other parent is not playing an active role with the children. So says single father Mike Gowen, in his article on Fathers raising their  children.

As a result, fathers may try to compensate by playing both roles, or hunting to find a mate to fill the other role.

Gowen recommends that: Rather than feeling like you have to replace your spouse for the sake of your children, concentrate on what you have to offer them. There is no reason to feel guilty because of your single parenthood. Be proud that your children have you.

As for trying to be both mother and father, Gowen says: This is fueled by the feeling of guilt for putting our children is this position in the first place. He says: None of us are superhuman. We have to learn to work with our children within our own resources. No matter how much you want, you can't be both Mom and Dad, so quit trying!
