Starting secondary
school
Starting secondary school is a big transition. The current
standard five students are moving from the small primary school
setting where they have spent the whole day with one or two teachers
to a comparatively huge system where they will be facing a flow of
teachers every day.
In order to prepare and support a child who is moving up in the
education system, remember what it was like for you at that age and
stage. What were your concerns, your fears and anxieties? Think back
to the challenges that you and other children faced in the early
days at secondary school. What kind of support did you needed from
your family and what do you wish you had been told?
While our experiences may not match exactly those of today’s
children, there will be areas of commonality. Encouraging your child
to talk and listening to your child may let you know how you can
best support him through a critical transition.
