Who Are We?

The aims of the organization are to:

  •  EMPOWER parents as an important segment of society, whose voices need to be heard;
  •  INFORM - the parent population of current trends and research, about child development and parenting;
  •  ENCOURAGE - parents to continue personal development;
  •  Promote INNOVATION in parenting practices to provide for the holistic development of our children;
  •  All this on the basis of OPTIMISM for the future of parents, our children, our nation and our world.

Services to the Community

  • Quarterly Parenting Support Newsletter

  • Workshops - these bring parents together to share experiences, information and to explore the development of new parenting skills.

    Workshops for schools, and community groups include:
    • Anger Management (12 hours)
    • Effective Discipline (12 hours)
    • How to Make Your Child a Winner (12 hours)
    • Improving Parent – Teacher Relationships (2 days)
    • Facilitator Training course for Parent Education (30 hours)
    • How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk - a programme designed by Faber and Mazlish from the book of the same name (20 hours)

    Workshops and courses are also designed on requested topics.

    Our programmes are highly interactive and based on a philosophy that recognizes the inherent wisdom in each participant.

    Our facilitators are trained and experienced teaching and in working with parents.

  • Short talks and presentations (30-45 mins)

  • Counselling and referrals services by trained professionals for parents and children.
     
  • Counselling / Listening Services
    Trinidad and Tobago Innovative Parenting Support offers counselling services by appointment or walk in on Mondays and Wednesdays. Recognizing an expressed need by parents to share parenting issues, this service is conducted in an environment which ensures the client’s right to confidentiality. Referral services are provided where the identified needs of the client cannot be met by TTIPS through our network with other agencies.

  • Facilitator Training Programmes for persons interested in setting up parent education programmes or Empowerment Groups.

  • Parent Empowerment Groups - bi-monthly meetings for small groups of parents to enhance personal development and parenting skills.

  • Educational Assessments – conducted by a qualified psychologist. Saturdays by appointment

  • Parent Resource Centre: we have a selection of books, videos and audio tapes on a range of parenting issues. We will also source information on specific topics on request.

  • Networking with other organizations to improve parenting education and support nationwide.

Parent Support Facilitators

Barbara King, co-founder of TTIPSBarbara King Certified Professional Facilitator (International Association of Facilitators), is a Facilitator Trainer with TTIPS, Families In Action and Creative Parenting for the New Era. She has been involved in Parenting Education since 1993, as researcher and producer of Baby Talk, aired on Music Radio 97, as Editor of Parenting Support Newsletter, and as a parenting workshop facilitator on a wide range of parenting issues.
 

Marina Torres, co-founder of TTIPSMarina Torres MSc., is a Child Development and Education Specialist. Her work involves assessing and addressing the needs of children in difficulties and their families. A co-founder of TTIPS, Marina regularly presents workshops around the country. She is also a lecturer in education at the University of the West Indies.
